Planning a healthcare operations data integration

How to scope, sequence and govern the first integrations for an operational intelligence project, without a multi-year programme.

Operational intelligence needs data from several systems, but it rarely needs all of it on day one. A phased plan gets value early and reduces risk.

Phase 1: files first

Scheduled extracts (bed lists, rosters, appointment exports) are often the fastest way to prove value. They need no interface changes and let you validate definitions.

Phase 2: event feeds

Once the metrics are agreed, move the highest-value sources to near-real-time feeds, typically admissions, transfers and discharges, followed by lab and imaging status.

Govern the fields

Integrate only the fields needed for operations. Document each field, its purpose and its retention.

  • Field inventory with purpose
  • Access review by role
  • Retention and deletion rules
